The entire group goes for two or three all-day field trips to nearby scientific institutions. From the Socorro campus, destinations might be the Very Large Array (of radio telescopes) and Sunspot / Apache Point Observatory. From Santa Barbara the group visits NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (where SSP alumni working at JPL lead the tour) and Mt. Wilson Observatory. In a given year, there might be an extra, off-topic field trip focusing on, for example, geology or archeology.

Non-academic off-campus trips -- swimming or shopping, for example -- also happen regularly.
