Los Angeles County Program Fee Waivers
The 2009 SSP program fee of $3,750 covers all costs: tuition, room & board, supplies, and transportation.
The Ahmanson Foundation has funded full program fee waivers for eligible residents of Los Angeles County. To be eligible, a student must be either:
- from an ethnic background that is under-represented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM): African American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander.
-or-
- from an economically disadvantaged household, defined as meeting the same income criteria that public schools use for free or reduced price lunch. (To verify this after a student has been admitted, we will ask the parent to complete the SSP Financial Aid Application.)
The fee waiver applies to eligible LA County students who have applied and been admitted to SSP through the usual process. In other words, there is no preference for, or discrimination against, LA County applicants in the admissions decisions.
Applicants from Southern California who are not eligible for the fee waiver may apply for SSP's generous need-based financial aid.
Q. How do I ask for a fee waiver?
A. On the online Student Identification form (question #9), which you complete to open your SSP application.
Q. If I get the waiver, are there any other costs to attend?
A. We suggest that students bring about $100 in spending money, but that is optional.
Q. I live in Northridge, not Los Angeles. Can I still qualify?
A. Yes. All of Los Angeles County is included, from Lancaster to Long Beach.
Q. Will you provide transportation to Ojai?
A. Yes, from the Flyaway bus terminal in Van Nuys. You can get there from LAX on the Flyaway bus; the fare is $4.
Q. How many LA students will get a fee waiver?
A. There is no preset limit, except that SSP's total enrollment is limited to 36 at each of two campuses, and most students will come from elsewhere.
Q. I don't go to a public school so I don't get "reduced price lunch", how do I qualify as "economically disadvantaged"?
A. Your parent will complete SSP's Financial Aid Application (this can be done before or after admission), which contains the information we need to verify your eligibility.
Q. If I get a fee waiver do I have to attend the Ojai, California campus, or could I go to Socorro, New Mexico instead?
A. The waiver is independent of campus assignment. You will give us your preference on the application form.
